University of Tennessee Overview University of Tennessee is one of the oldest educational institutions in the United States. University of Tennessee was started in 1794, before Tennessee officially became a state, as Blount College in an area currently known as downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. Samuel Carrick was the first president of this well respected school.

University of Tennessee experienced several misfortunes in its struggle to exist. Funding problems and the Civil War negatively affected the college. During the Civil War, the school was forced to close and the buildings were used as a hospital for wounded soldiers. Buildings were severly damaged and blasting holes were found throughout the grounds. Fortunately, throughout the devastation, the school survived and was granted $18,500 for repairs and refurbishings. In 1866, University of Tenessee reopened to serve students in pursuing a high quality education.
