Overview The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) is a public university located in Edmond, Oklahoma. It was founded in 1890 as the Territorial Normal School, an institution that trained new teachers. This made UCO the oldest public institution of higher learning in the state. During the 1940s , new programs were added, which meant that the institution was no longer just a teacher's college. The name of the institution was changed to Central State University in 1971. In 1990, the name was changed to University of Central Oklahoma, but many people still refer to it as “Central State”.

With nearly 18,000 students enrolled, UCO is one of the largest universities in the region. UCO has a very good reputation among institutions of higher learning in the United States, ranking among the top 10% of the Forbes list of America's Best Colleges. Numerous graduate and undergraduate programs are offered by the university. It is also the only institution that grants bachelor's degrees in humanities, funeral services, golf management, insurance, forensic science and business legal studies in Oklahoma.
