Hertz leads the U.S. industry in airport rentals. The company also operates on an international level, with over 8,000 branches in 146 countries around the globe. The Hertz Company was founded in 1918, when Walter L. Jacobs started a car rental business in Chicago with an inventory of a dozen vehicles. Within a few years, the fleet had expanded to 600 cars and the company was making about a million dollars a year.
In 1923, Mr. Jacobs sold the firm to John Hertz, the owner of Yellow Cab. A few years later, Hertz sold the thriving company to the General Motors Corporation. General Motors retained ownership of the company until 1953 and then sold it to the Omnibus Corporation. Omnibus changed the name of the company to the Hertz Corporation in 1954.
The rental car market began to burgeon in 1960 due to the overall growth of the travel industry. Hertz went public in 1997. Although occasionally outstripped by competition, Hertz has held its own and kept its place as the largest airport rental company on the globe.
