"Union Bank is a fantastic organization, in terms of reputation and standing within the banking industry. The organization is very ethical and has avoided the pitfalls that most other banks were guilty of during the sub-prime era. Also, the organization still offers a pension. However, technology within the organization is lacking."

Assistant Vice President

"It's a job... not a place to build a career."

What do you like about working at Union Bank?

"The compensation was above-average relative to the banking industry; excellent bonus and health benefits. This is one of the only banks offering a traditional defined-benefit pension and medical on first day of hire."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"All interviews are coordinated with Talent Acquisition and Staffing with corporate recruiters who may or may not have experience in the business line they recruit for. That said, be sure to ask plenty of questions about the position and be sure you check background of the hiring manager via external reference sources before accepting an offer with this firm. Try to connect with an employee in the business line you are interviewing with and ask them about their job to get a better feel of culture."

What don't you like about working at Union Bank?

"Office Politics in my department. Firm is privately owned bank with tight control by senior management and directors based overseas. Local managers do not have any input into decisions being made, resulting in low morale and employee productivity. Senior management micromanages every aspect of business. This company inhibits engaged employees and considers them a threat rather than fostering collaboration, independent thinking, and encouragement."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Give local and department managers the ability to manage their business lines. Not everything needs to be approved by the Board of Directors or an oversight committee. Be more receptive to employee ideas and have an open-mind. Realize that parent company is a Japanese based corporation that has different culture, work-ethic, and values that cannot be compared to the US. Just because Tokyo doesn't think it's a good idea, doesn't mean it's bad..."
